Coaching and education for all
levels of exercisers and athletes with diabetes.
Diabetes Training Camp offers one-of-a-kind, life changing programs to people living with THE CHALLENGES of diabetes.
Through education around clinical diabetes, nutrition and mental skills, Diabetes Training Camp (DTC) teaches people how to live the life they want to live, while successfully managing their diabetes and not limiting their potential.
Type 1 Adults, Teens and their Families
DTC’s flagship programs and camps have mainly focused on those living with Type 1 diabetes. Type 1, or insulin-dependent diabetes, is an autoimmune disease in which the pancreas produces little or no insulin. Insulin is a hormone needed to control blood sugar levels and allows sugar (glucose) to enter cells to produce energy.
Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a 24/7 disease that requires constant management. People with T1D continuously and carefully balance insulin intake with eating, exercise and other activities. They also measure blood-sugar levels through finger pricks, ideally at least six times a day, or by wearing a continuous glucose monitor.
For someone living with T1D, exercising and being active can be one of the most challenging things they undertake. Their bodies do not regulate fuel metabolism or glucose levels like those of us without diabetes. As a result, their glucose levels can go very high or very low, even dangerously low at times.
DTC offers people living with T1D the tools they need to feel knowledgeable, empowered and confident to manage their blood glucose levels while unlocking their full athletic potential. In addition, we offer a community of staff and other campers who “get it.”
“It was a week of wonder, a week of learning, a week of ability. I was attempting everything that was offered. I was 19 again and no one was laughing! Everyone was encouraging. It was motivational, educational and helped me to build a level of self-confidence that I have never known. It helped me build self-reliance. What a difference a week makes when all you have is support and guidance, when all you want to do is to reach out and help yourself. It was all there. I am so grateful to have had such an opportunity.”
In 2018, DTC debuted its first boot camp designed specifically for people living with Type 2 diabetes or prediabetes. The program gave people dealing with the challenges of Type 2 the knowledge, confidence and community to manage their disease, live the life they want to live and thrive. The 3-day boot camp includes fitness sessions, mental skills and clinically-based lectures and nutritional information that arm campers with the knowledge and experience to leave with a plan to live a healthier life. And, once part of the DTC community, they receive ongoing support to reach their goals.
“I want to say thank you to Diabetes Training Camp and all of coaches, trainers, organizers with the camp. I attended DTC2 camp in March 2019, and I learned so much…Learning about blood sugars and exercise was the greatest thing to overcome but I think I got it. I have lost 13 pounds and hopefully will continue to see weight loss.
All of you in the community, I want to say thank you. I have never stayed this long with an exercise program and I do not plan on stopping any time soon. l love the way I feel after exercising.”
