Did you know…

…type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a chronic autoimmune disease where the immune system mistakes insulin-producing cells (beta cells) as a threat and destroys them, which is life-threatening.

…for people living with T1D, a 1st degree relative has 15x greater risk of developing T1D than the general population.

almost 60% of people newly diagnosed with T1D are over the age of 20.

…of adults diagnosed with T1D over the age of 30, 40% were originally misdiagnosed as type 2 diabetes. Right now, the diagnosis of one’s type of diabetes is not clear cut. The correct diagnosis is not only driven by age, race, size or shape.

we now have the ability to screen for type 1 diabetes in your loved ones!

…early screening for T1D enables people to educate and inform themselves, and prepare to live with T1D before full diagnosis.

…On Saturday, June 6th, Diabetes Training Camp will be hosting a VCamp dedicated to Screening and Early Detection of Type 1 Diabetes

From Risk to Readiness:
Changing Outcomes Through Early T1D Screening

This VCamp will be led by Dr. Kimber Simmons of the University of Colorado Medical Center. Dr. Simmons is a leading researcher, clinician, and international expert in the field of early detection & screening, and treatments for people who screen positive for T1D. She also serves on DTC’s Board of Directors and is DTC’s pediatric endocrinologist on the ground at DTC’s Teen Boot Camp. Kimber will be joined by special guests who have been successfully screened and have started treatment to delay the onset of T1D. Together, we will discuss their personal experience with screening, the journey of screening positive, and the experience of receiving current therapy. Kristi Paguio, LCSW, T1D and DTC mental skills coach will also be on hand to discuss the psychological impact of screening, screening positive for T1D, and the powerful benefit that comes from knowing your risk factors. And, DTC’s dietitian and CDE, Tiffany Rios will join us to speak to fueling and blood glucose management through nutritional choices.

MORE FACTS & WHO SHOULD SCREEN
  • 90% of people diagnosed with T1D do not have a family history
  • If your sibling has T1D – your risk for T1D is 27x higher
  • If you have an autoimmune disorder (Hashimoto’s, Graves, Celiac, RA) – your risk for T1D is 2-3x higher
  • Those diagnosed with type 2 diabetes that are not feeling well and/or not responding well to therapies for type 2 diabetes – you may have been mis-diagnosed
  • Those diagnosed with type 2 diabetes that have a personal history of an autoimmune condition, or have a family member with type 1 diabetes – you may have been mis-diagnosed

WHY TO SCREEN
  • Knowledge is power: if you have 1 of the 5 autoantibodies, then you are at higher risk, and if you have 2+ autoantibodies, the earliest stages of T1D may have already begun.
  • Prepare for what may lie ahead, develop a monitoring plan, and reduce your risk of severe complications like Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA).
  • We now have a treatment option to delay the progression through the stages of T1D, delaying the need for insulin therapy.

Please plan to attend this very special edition of DTC’s VCamp. Bring your family and loved ones with you too! We look forward to educating you and yours about screening & detection, AND the steps that can be taken by those that screen positive.

Diabetes Training Camp is committed to being a valuable resource and supporting our T1D community through all the stages of T1D.

Until there is a cure, there’s DTC!

FEATURING

Kris Osterberg, PhD, RD, CSSD

Gatorade Sports Science Institute

Dr. Osterberg brings both scientific expertise and athletic grit to everything she does. She leads the GSSI satellite lab at IMG Academy in Florida, where she studies how nutrition and gut health impact athletic performance.

She first joined the GSSI team back in 2001 and returned in 2021 to help lead cutting-edge research on how athletes fuel and recover.

Before becoming a scientist, Kris played Division 1 basketball at Colorado State University. She later earned a PhD in Human Nutrition from Virginia Tech, with research focused on the gut microbiome and metabolic health. Throughout her career, she’s studied how exercise, nutrition, and recovery interact—especially in active individuals.

When she’s not in the lab, you’ll find Kris on a trail somewhere—running, biking, hiking, or paddle boarding. She lives in Florida with her husband and three dogs, and she’s passionate about making science useful and actionable for real people.

About V Camp

In 2020, COVID forced us to pivot and find NEW ways to offer DTC camps, programs and services to our community. We had to cancel our in-person camps, but we couldn’t live with the idea of not learning, training and CONNECTING with the diabetes community. So, we created the V Camp programming. We know this experience is different from our in-person camps, but we learned that we can provide a unique and life-changing program dedicated to empowering the community of people with diabetes to thrive virtually. As a matter of fact, virtual programs were so popular that V Camps have been permanently added to our schedules.

The V Camps were created when we could not be together in person to continue to provide support and education for people living with diabetes. Virtually, we were able to learn, train and connect the DTC experts with new and alumni campers. We realized that virtual camps offer unique value and have added them permanently to our camp and program offerings.

The V Camp is founded in DTC’s core principles around diabetes management for exercise and sports and offers the same great information and community that our in-person camps offer. Camps range from one to three days.

Take a look at the schedule for this camp. The schedule is subject to change.
